I am a newbie here. Thanks to Dr. Sievers for admin'g this site. I have really learned a lot. I just picked up my 1974 180S43 after 30 years and am just getting back into playing.

Of course, I am struggling with making my "Silver" tone, but have a few left over music books from the olden days.

My question: I am starting at the beginning of these books to attempt to retrain both my chops and fingers. Are these good starting books or should I try newer books? Here is what I have:

Clarke's "Technical Studies for the Cornet"
Trumpet Today- A planned program for building the High Register
Modern Arban-St. Jacome Comprehensive Course for the Trumpet
Harold Mitchell's Trumpet Method Book 2
Sachse 100 Studies

I then went out and bought these:

Arban Book II
Rubank Elementary Studies

Where should I start and should I ignore some of these?

Also, anyone know of a trumpet teacher in Greenville, SC?

Thanks for all your help.

Hello to my old friend Bill Siegried whom seems to do a fair amount of posting here Very Happy

Regards,

Keith Brown

Hi Keith, Good to see you here. I'll bet Karl knows someone in or near Greenville who could teach you. In the meantime 20 minutes of playing in the Herbert Clark book doing some single and double tonguing and varied articulations would be a good way to start. I think it's vital to find a community band or other group to play in as soon as you can. It's hard to keep momentum on your own. Don't be in too much of a hurry. You were a pretty accomplished trumpet player in HS so it will take time to get back to where you were. Most importantly have fun with it. Talk to you soon. Bill

Thanks Bill. In retrospect, I had no idea how truly fortunate I was to have John Wright as my teacher back in Va. Great teacher and I just loved hearing him play. While not expecting to have quite the same luck again here, I will take your advice and see what I can find here - and see if any local recommendations show up on this forum.

I will also check on a local community band as you suggest.

Appreciate the help. This forum is really a great resource.

John W. is still busy teaching and playing here in DC since he retired from the Marine Band. We play together in a variety of bands and orchestras around town. Always a good time. As I mentioned earlier I've been to the factory and have had numerous students buy new Bach Strads over the past year. I think they're as good as ever. The mouthpieces are made on state of the art CNC lathes so the tolerances are spot on. Hard to say what motivates some people. Strikes are sensitive issues and there are always lots of opinions out there. Karl's requested we not get into those kind of discussions here so it's best we leave it at that.

Thanks Bill - I understand and will certainly abide by the Forums decorum.

Please tell John W. that I said "hello' the next time you see him. He probably won't remember me, but he was a major influence on me - even if I didn't fully appreciate it at the time.

Hopefully I can find a teacher down here soon!
